Ellora is one of the largest rock-cut monastery-temple cave complexes in the world, featuring 34 monasteries and temples extending over 2 km. Built between 600-1000 CE, they represent Buddhism (caves 1-12), Hinduism (caves 13-29), and Jainism (caves 30-34). The Kailasa Temple (Cave 16), carved top-down from a single rock mass, is a UNESCO-listed architectural marvel.
Just 1 km from the Ellora Caves entrance stands the Grishneshwar Temple — home to one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. The beautifully decorated Hemadpanthi temple is particularly crowded on Mondays and during Mahashivratri. This makes an Ellora visit a combined cultural and spiritual experience.
Ellora Caves are open Wednesday to Monday, 6 AM to 6 PM (closed on Tuesday). Entry: ₹40 for Indians, ₹600 for foreigners. Located 30 km from Aurangabad, the journey takes 45-60 minutes by road. It can be combined with a Daulatabad Fort visit (15 km from Aurangabad on the same route) in a comfortable half-day trip.
