Historical Places Near Aurangabad Every Traveler Must Visit

Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar) is Maharashtra's heritage capital — surrounded by UNESCO sites, Mughal monuments, and ancient fortresses within just 150 km.

1. Ajanta Caves (100 km) — UNESCO World Heritage

The crown jewel of Maharashtra's heritage, the 30 Ajanta cave-temples date to 200 BCE – 650 CE. Their Buddhist paintings depicting the life of the Buddha are among the finest ancient artworks in the world. A dedicated day trip is essential to fully appreciate them.

2. Ellora Caves & Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga (30 km)

Ellora's 34 rock-cut caves represent three faiths — Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain — carved between 600–1000 CE. The monolithic Kailasa Temple (Cave 16), dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the world's largest rock-cut structure. Adjacent to Ellora is the Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga, one of India's 12 sacred Jyotirlingas.

3. Daulatabad Fort (15 km)

Rising 200 metres from the Deccan plateau, Daulatabad Fort was once Muhammad Bin Tughluq's capital. The fort's ingenious defence systems — moats, secret passages, and a pitch-black spiral tunnel — make it a fascinating exploration. Panoramic views of the Marathwada plains from the top are breathtaking.

4. Bibi Ka Maqbara (5 km) — Mughal Architecture

Often called the "Mini Taj Mahal", the Bibi Ka Maqbara was built in 1678 by Mughal Prince Azam Shah in memory of his mother Rabia-ud-Daurani. Set in a charbagh garden, it's a striking example of Mughal architecture — and far less crowded than Agra's Taj.

5. Khuldabad (25 km) — Tomb of Aurangzeb

The quiet town of Khuldabad holds the graves of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and several Sufi saints. The simple, unadorned grave of one of India's most powerful emperors offers a moving contrast to the grandeur of Mughal tombs in North India.

6. Panchakki & Aurangabad Caves (4–5 km)

Panchakki (Water Mill) is a 17th-century engineering marvel — a watermill driven by an underground channel. Nearby, the Aurangabad Caves feature 9 Buddhist cave temples with some of the finest sculptural work in the Deccan.

7. Paithan & Jayakwadi Dam (55 km)

Paithan is the ancient capital of the Satavahana dynasty and the birthplace of the famous Paithani saree. The Jayakwadi Dam here creates a beautiful reservoir with boating facilities and the Nath Sagar bird sanctuary.
