Daulatabad Fort: The Unconquered Fortress of Maharashtra

Daulatabad Fort, just 15 km from Aurangabad, is one of the strongest medieval fortifications in India β€” a hilltop citadel with labyrinthine dark tunnels, a 14th-century minaret, and panoramic views.

About Daulatabad Fort

Daulatabad (formerly Devagiri) was the capital of the Yadava dynasty from the 9th to 14th century. In 1327, Delhi Sultan Muhammad bin Tughluq famously relocated the entire population of Delhi here β€” only to reverse the decision 2 years later. The fort sits atop a 180-meter volcanic rock and was considered impregnable. The name Daulatabad means City of Prosperity.

Key Structures to See

The Chand Minar (58 meters tall) built in 1435 CE is the fort's most iconic structure β€” a victory tower modeled after the Qutub Minar. The complex includes the Chini Mahal where Aurangzeb imprisoned the last Golconda king, a stunning water reservoir, and a hilltop Baradari offering 360-degree views of the Deccan plateau.

The Dark Tunnel (Andhari)

The most thrilling part of any Daulatabad visit is the Andhari β€” a pitch-black winding tunnel carved through the rock that formed the fort's final defense. Designed to confuse invaders with multiple dead ends and steep drops, today visitors navigate it with torchlight. Bats inhabit the tunnel β€” eerie, memorable, and unlike anything else in Maharashtra.

Timings and Entry

Open Tuesday to Sunday, sunrise to sunset (closed Monday). Entry: β‚Ή25 for Indians, β‚Ή300 for foreigners. The hike to the hilltop takes 30-45 minutes through the tunnel and switchback paths. Allow 2-2.5 hours total. Water and snacks available at entrance.
