About Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga

Trimbakeshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas β€” the holiest shrines of Lord Shiva in Hinduism. The Shivalinga here uniquely has three faces representing Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva (Trimurti). The temple is also the origin point of the holy Godavari River, the longest river in peninsular India. It is located in the Brahmagiri hills near Nashik city.

The Temple and Architecture

The current Trimbakeshwar temple was built in 1755 CE by Nana Saheb Peshwa in outstanding Hemadpanthi style. The main sanctum houses the unique Trimurti Shivalinga. Photography inside is not permitted. The outer courtyard and mandapa are open to all. The Godavari Kumbh Mela is held here every 12 years, attracting millions of devotees.

Darshan Timings

Temple hours: 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM. The main Abhishek (ritual bathing of the Shivalinga) occurs in the early morning. Mondays and Shivratri attract massive crowds. Normal darshan queue: 30 minutes to 2 hours. The temple town is very peaceful on weekday mornings.

Brahmagiri Hill and Godavari Source

The 3 km trek to Brahmagiri Hill β€” from which the Godavari River originates β€” is one of the best treks near Nashik. The origin point (Kushavarta) is considered extremely sacred. The forest hillside trek takes about 1.5 hours one way and offers excellent Sahyadri views. Carry water and wear walking shoes.
